This fall I found a Barred Owl perched in the branches of a maple tree. He was beautiful and patient; he let me get to about 6 feet away for close-up photos. Then he gifted me the honor of watching him have dinner, and we hung out for quite a while watching the sun set against the gold and green autumn leaves.

The running of the IndyCars at Portland over the Labor Day weekend had many memorable moments. --
The pole sitter was a rookie, Colton Herta. The start of the race was once again filled with very expensive carnage, but Colton avoided contact and went on to lead 37 laps before losing tire grip resulting in a 4th place finish. Will Power pulled off a win, with another rookie, Felix Rosenqvist, taking second and Alexander Rossi holding on to third place.
Pictured here: Ryan Hunter-Reay escapes in a cloud of tire smoke after contact with Jack Harvey.

The IndyCar series will be back this fall in Portland, Oregon. Last years race was a fabulous production with exciting racing. Although Will Power qualified on pole, and points-leader Scott Dixon evaded damage in the first-lap mayhem, Takuma Sato's steady, consistent performance earned him a shining moment in the winner's circle.

On April 14, 2019 a Washington state sheriff's deputy died in the line of duty. He was brought down by a lawless criminal who was later brought to justice at the conclusion of a manhunt. The following week hundreds of law enforcement officers came together for a moving memorial convoy from Kalama down Interstate 5 into Portland, in a public tribute to the fallen officer and a show of support for his family.
The men and women who risk their lives to make our world a safer place; who rush to our aid in an emergency; who put themselves in danger to rescue us; they deserve our utmost respect, honor and prayers. Our deepest condolences to the families who lose their hero.

Recently the rose-like Ranunculus flower has become one of my favorite sights in my flower garden. The beautiful spring and summer blossoms come in a variety of colors from this soft coral orange to brilliant purple, variegated pink, or vibrantly bright yellow.

Winter is almost over and the black branches of a lonely leafless tree are reaching across the evening sky, grasping for the setting sun. This view was far more dramatic that night than the actual sunset.

This young deer was very bold. He taunted our dogs by spending quite a while roaming about our backyard in the middle of the afternoon when deer have usually disappeared into the forest. He allowed me to play photo tag with him for a good fifteen minutes, posing with the beautiful sunny foliage for background.

In September of 2017 a devastating fire swept through the Columbia River Gorge. The Eagle Creek Fire threatened a number of towns, with worry of it reaching Portland. The incredible bravery and diligence of a huge number of emergency workers kept most of the residences safe, but too many acres of the beautiful wilderness were destroyed.
It was an eerie afternoon photographing amidst a rain of burning fir cones and choking smoke, watching the flames jump from ridge to ridge all the while taunting the two insignificant firefighting helicopters. Eighty-foot firs glowed like a Times Square Christmas tree before exploding and sending flames hundreds of feet into the air.
This image was captured from the Washington side of the Bonneville Dam, shooting across to the Oregon side of the river, as the fire burned down to the edge of the I-84 freeway.

Ornamental Kale is an amazingly resilient gardening plant which provides a bright splash of color throughout the gray winter months. Although Kale has many variegated styles, this particular specimen is putting on a show purely in pink.
